Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the BJP would win 26 out of 30 seats in West Bengal and 37 out of 47 seats in Assam after the first phase of assembly elections conducted on Saturday in the two states.

Addressing a press conference, he said, "Based on discussions and feedback received from booth level workers and leaders, I can confidently say that the we are winning 26 of 30 seats which went in for polling in the first phase in West Bengal." He further added that while the people in West Bengal voted for a change as they were unhappy with Mamata Banerjee's governance, in Assam, the people voted for development and a flood-free state.

Thanking the election commission for the violence-free polls, he said, "After many years, no incidents of violence were reported, and I thank the Election Commission for conducting a peaceful election." He also thanked the voters of the BJP and added, "The massive turnout of shows enthusiasm among voters."
