After the recent introduction of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in France, Sri Lanka and Mauritius are set to join the ranks of countries adopting the Indian digital payment system.

Additionally, Mauritius will also witness the launch of RuPay cards today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, will virtually attend the launch event at 1 pm.

With strong cultural and people-to-people connections between India and both Sri Lanka and Mauritius, the introduction of UPI is expected to enhance digital transactions and connectivity. This move is part of PM Modi's vision to share India's fintech innovation and digital public infrastructure experiences with partner nations.

The launch will facilitate Indians visiting Sri Lanka and Mauritius to utilise UPI for seamless and rapid digital transactions.

Similarly, Mauritian travellers in India will also have access to UPI services. Moreover, the extension of RuPay services will enable Mauritian banks to issue RuPay cards for transactions in both India and Mauritius.

India, recognized as a leader in fintech innovation and digital public infrastructure, is sharing its development experiences and innovation with other countries under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

The initial global launch of UPI took place at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on February 2 during the Republic Day reception, aligning with PM Modi's vision to take UPI to a global audience.

UPI, a mobile-based payment system in India, facilitates round-the-clock payments via a virtual payment address, consolidating multiple bank accounts into a single app and providing various banking features in one platform.
