New Delhi: A government report revealed that the road transport and highways sector is the top number of delayed projects while the railways and petroleum sector follow.

The former has 358 delayed projects from 769, while the latter two have 111 from 178 and 87 from 154 projects, respectively, PTI reported, citing the latest flash report on infrastructure projects for November 2022.

The report stated that the most delayed project is the Muneerabad-Mahaboobnagar rail project, which by 276 months. At second, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project, which is late by 247 months. Belapur-Seawood-Urban Electrified Double Line is in the third position and is delayed by 228 months.

Further, it says that 756 projects are delayed with respect to their original schedules, and 304 projects have reported additional delays vis-a-vis their date of completion reported in the previous month.

Of the said 304 projects, 58 are mega projects, with expenditures of Rs 1,000 crore and above.

In the road transport and highways sector, the total original cost of implementation of 769 projects when sanctioned was ₹ 4,33,744.86 crore, but estimates ran later up to Rs 4,60,524.16 crore due to a cost overrun of 6.2 per cent. The expenditure incurred on these projects till November 2022 was ₹ 2,77,208.24 crore or 60.2 per cent of the anticipated cost of the projects.

In railways, the original cost of implementation of 173 projects when sanctioned was Rs 3,72,761.45 crore, which reached Rs 6,24,583.37 crore with a whopping 67.6 per cent cost overrun. The expenditure incurred on these projects till November was ₹ 3,59,996.26 crore, which is 57.6 per cent of the anticipated cost of the projects.

Regarding the petroleum sector, the total original cost of implementation of 154 projects was ₹ 3,81,885.12 crore. However, this was subsequently anticipated at ₹ 4,01,966.41 crore -- a cost overrun of 5.3 per cent. The expenditure incurred on these projects till November 2022 was ₹ 1,48,897.69 crore or 37 per cent of the anticipated cost of the projects.
