Xi Jinping commits to 'world peace' in New Year's message to Putin
text_fieldsChinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed his commitment to global peace and development in a New Year’s message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to reports from China’s state media on Tuesday.
Xi emphasized China's steadfast dedication to advancing reforms and fostering global harmony, stating, “No matter how the international situation changes, China will remain committed to comprehensively deepening reform and promoting world peace and development,” as reported by CCTV, China’s state broadcaster.
While presenting itself as a neutral party since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, China has maintained strong political and economic ties with Moscow. This stance has drawn criticism from NATO, with some members labeling Beijing an "enabler" of the conflict due to its reluctance to condemn Russia's actions.
Xi highlighted the shared approach of China and Russia in navigating global challenges, stating, “In the face of rapidly evolving changes and a turbulent international situation, China and Russia have consistently advanced hand-in-hand along the correct path of non-alignment, non-confrontation, and avoiding targeting any third party.”
The message underscored the close personal rapport between the two leaders, with Xi referring to Putin as his "best friend" and Putin describing Xi as a "reliable partner." Their enduring partnership persists against the backdrop of increasing friction with Western nations, particularly over Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Russia in 2024, Xi described the relationship as reaching “a new important milestone.” Reflecting on the history of bilateral cooperation, he noted, “After three-quarters of a century of ups and downs, China-Russia relations have become increasingly mature and stable.”
