New Delhi: Reports from China show surging covid cases in Shanghai are worse than thought.

One image from Reuters showed people waiting behind closed gates for food delivery in the locked-down city.

More harrowing images of hunger and panic emerge from China's financial hub.

One man reportedly broke covid norms, and approached police asking them to arrest him in the hope of getting some food in jail.

The city of 26 million residents has been battling the worst surge, requiring shut-down.

The city is overly pressured to contain China's biggest Covid outbreak since the coronavirus was first discovered in the city of Wuhan in late 2019.

Having asked to shut themselves in homes, people are frustrated as well as struggling to get daily supplies, reports say.

Essentials items including medical supplies ran out precipitating a crisis.

People are hard put to get delivery slots, and food prices are rocketing, according to India Today.

Videos posted on Twitter show people screaming from window for help.

Authorities have barred people from going out of their homes.

Residents in another video was shouting " help, nothing to eat", the report said.

In one video, quite out of character for citizens in China, people were protesting against medical professionals.

It seems authorities are unable to streamline essential supplies to the locked down city.

Shanghai authorities warned on Wednesday anyone violating Covid-19 lockdown rules would be dealt with strictly.

Meanwhile, a Twitter user shared the video of a man, breaking the norms and begging the police to arrest him.

The starving man thought he could eat something from the jail.

Social media users report of small protests and riots over dried up food supplies in Shanghai.

Unverified reports said people 'ransacking and looting' supermarkets.

In silent protest some residents put their open refrigerators out on the balcony, showing no food supply.

There were reports of health officials clubbing to death pets of covid 19 patients.

CNN referred to a video of a health official beating a dog inside a residential compound.

More painful of all, there were reports of people committing suicide to escape starvation.
