Will be going to Georgia to be arrested: Donald Trump on election case
text_fieldsWashington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump said that he will turn himself in at the Fulton County jail in Georgia on Thursday, in a case related to illegal scheming for overturning his 2020 election loss, CNN reported on Monday, citing sources.
The date was set during discussions with the Fulton County district attorney's office on Monday as they negotiated his consent bond and conditions for release, as reported by CNN.
“Can you believe it? I’ll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be arrested”, Trump wrote on social media Monday night.
In a 98-page Georgia indictment revealed last week, a total of 41 criminal counts were lodged against Trump and 18 other defendants. The charges were connected to their efforts to overturn Trump’s loss in the 2020 election in the state.
Upon Trump's surrender, the vicinity around the Rice Street Jail will undergo a "hard lockdown," as announced by the local sheriff's office earlier on Monday. The timing of the surrender was not explicitly mentioned in the statement.
A court filing on Monday detailed that Trump will face a $200,000 bond. Signed by Trump's attorneys and Fulton Country District Attorney Fani Willis, it sets out release terms including restrictions on intimidating witnesses and obstructing justice.
Trump, who is currently the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, along with his co-defendants, was indicted on August 14th. Willis granted them until noon ET (1600 GMT) on Friday to either surrender or face arrest.
Prosecutors have proposed a trial start date of March 4th, while Trump's legal team has requested a trial in 2026.
Notably, Trump's reported surrender on Thursday will come a day after the first Republican primary presidential debate.
