San Fransico: After running a poll on whether to reactivate former American president Donald Trump's Twitter account, Elon Musk reinstated the handle after a narrow majority voted for the same, Agence France-Presse reported.

Twitter removed Trump's handle from its platform after a mob of supporters of Trump stormed the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021. The mob intended to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential elections.

After the 24 hours poll ended, Twitter CEO Elon Musk tweeted, "The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated."

He added, "Vox Populi, Vox Dei," which is Latin and means "The voice of the people is the voice of God."

In the polls, more than 15 million daily users voted, and 51.8 per cent supported Trump's handle to be reinstated against 48.2 per cent.

During Trump's regime, he used Twitter as his mouthpiece to communicate policy announcements and to attack political rivals as well as supporters. He had more than 88 million followers on the microblogging platform.

After the banned handle reappeared, Trump's political allies hailed his return.

Back when he was kicked out of the platform, Trump had proclaimed that he would not come back on the platform. He appeared in a video on Saturday and welcomed Musk's poll.

He said that the poll was overwhelming, but he does not wish to come back on Twitter and have "something… called Truth Social."
