Manila: The worst storm of the year which hit the eastern Philippines on Sunday killed four people. Super typhoon Goni following ferocious winds caused power outages and infrastructure damage. The authorities said that nearly 1 million people were evacuated in anticipation of "devastating" floods and winds.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) predicted emergence of the destructive typhoon over the Philippine Sea between Sunday and Monday early morning.

The forecast expects storm surges of more than 9 feet with heavy rains which may create floods, landslides and a cause to damage the coastal inundation. The typhoon, locally called Rolly, sustained maximum winds of 215 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 295 km/h, moving westward at the speed of 25 km/h, as reported by PAGASA.

Goni arrives a week after the passing of the Molave storm, which hit the area, killing 22 people and flooding a large agricultural area before heading for Vietnam.
