Trump regime to revoke Ilhan Omar’s US citizenship, deport her
text_fieldsWashington: The Donald Trump government in the USA is investigating Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar in a bid to revoke her American citizenship and potentially deport her, The Wall Street Journal has reported.
The investigation is examining Omar’s immigration history and the circumstances under which she obtained citizenship after arriving in the United States as a Somali refugee in 1995. She became a US citizen in 2000.
According to the newspaper, investigators have issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to some of Omar’s relatives, and are examining family immigration records. The inquiry centres on allegations that Omar or her late father misrepresented her age in immigration documents, potentially enabling her to obtain citizenship through her father rather than through a separate application.
Omar’s office has dismissed the investigation as baseless. She has previously denied immigration fraud.
The probe follows a search of Omar’s Minnesota home by federal agents, days before the November 3 midterm elections. Agents reportedly seized her passport, mobile phone, computers and notebooks under a judicially authorised warrant. The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that the search was connected to an ongoing federal investigation.
The timing has drawn attention as Omar, a prominent progressive Democrat and frequent target of Trump and his allies over her Somali background and immigration history, seeks a fifth term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Homeland Security Investigations examined a similar allegation during former President Joe Biden’s administration but did not proceed because investigators lacked evidence of fraud.
No lawsuit seeking to strip Omar of her citizenship has been reported. Any attempt to revoke her citizenship would require court proceedings; the investigation alone does not authorise her deportation.
