Sri Lankan situation resembles Indias 1991 crisis: Sri Lankan MP

Colombo: One of Sri Lanka's opposition lawmakers drew parallel between Sri Lankan crisis today and India's worst economic crisis of 1991.

Harsha de Silva of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party said the situation in Sri Lanka was similar to India's crisis in the 1990s.

He urged all parties to work together to help the country come of it.

All political parties in India then came together alongside the efficient work of Dr Manmohan Singh and Montek singh Ahluwaliya, Harsha de Silva said.

Calling for the president to create a platform, he said the plan would fail if the parties are separated.

His party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya chose to be part of a national government on the condition of the President giving a time-frame to abolish his executive powers and stepping down, according to India Today.

Sri Lankans wanted Gotabaya Rajapaksa to go, he stated. Unless the president worked toward quitting, he said "we" would continue in opposition.

He held Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Mahinda Rajapksa and the extended family responsible for taking the country to an abyss.

The MP said that the violence, instigated by the Rajapaksa supporters and the way the public retaliated, was not how the country liked to see its people, according to the report.
