The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed Monday that Russia's ground forces have been placed on high combat alert, which means they have intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Russian submarines are armed with nuclear missiles, RT reported.

RT reports that the move was as per the order by President Putin on Sunday.

In his remarks, Putin mentions "illegitimate sanctions" against his country as well as "aggressive statements" from the West.

The U.S., UK, and EU countries have all implemented sanctions against Russia for its military operation in Ukraine.

Russia's nuclear deterrent force was placed on "special" alert earlier today, RT reported.

The announcement was made by Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and chief of staff Valery Gerasimov.

"Western countries are not only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic area. I'm speaking about the illegitimate sanctions that everyone is well aware of. However, the top officials of the leading NATO countries also make aggressive statements against our country as well," Putin said.

RT reports that Putin said the move was in response to 'hostile' rhetoric by NATO officials.
