Washington/Tehran: Donald Trump stated that Washington and Tehran had engaged in constructive weekend discussions, prompting him to delay potential military strikes on Iranian power and energy infrastructure for five days. The decision, he indicated, was influenced by the overall direction and tone of the exchanges.

“I am please to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“Based on the tenor and tone of these in depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, witch (sic) will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions,” he wrote.

Markets reacted swiftly to the prospect of de-escalation. Global oil prices dropped sharply, reflecting investor optimism that diplomatic engagement could avert further conflict. Brent crude fell significantly after earlier surging, while West Texas Intermediate also declined steeply, reversing gains made amid fears of supply disruptions. The volatility underscored how closely energy markets are tracking geopolitical developments in the region, CNN reported.

However, Iranian authorities have categorically denied the existence of any direct dialogue with Washington. Officials suggested that such claims were intended to stabilise oil markets and provide strategic breathing room rather than reflect genuine negotiations. They reiterated that Iran does not view itself as the initiator of the conflict and signalled that any proposals to reduce tensions should be directed toward the United States, according to the CNN report.

Amid these contradictory statements, Israeli forces reported conducting strikes on targets linked to the Iranian regime within Tehran, marking a significant escalation in urban areas. Iranian media outlets confirmed multiple sites in the capital had been hit in the latest wave of attacks.

The humanitarian impact is also becoming increasingly visible. Emergency responders from the Iranian Red Crescent have been engaged in search operations following damage to residential structures, highlighting the risks faced by civilians as the conflict unfolds, according to CNN.
