Not involved in Kremlin drone attack, Russia is lying: White House
text_fieldsWashington: The White House has denied any involvement in the alleged drone attack on the Kremlin. Moscow has been claiming that it was an assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"We had nothing to do with this. Peskov is just lying there, pure and simple," said John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council. He was speaking to MSNBC on Wednesday when he clarified that Washington does not support or condone attacks by Ukraine outside its borders. "We've been clear with them publicly and we've been clear with them privately that we do not encourage nor do we enable them to strike outside Ukraine."
His statement comes after Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Washington of guiding Ukraine to launch the assault. "Decisions on such attacks are not made in Kyiv, but in Washington. Kyiv only does what it is told to do."
Kyiv has also denied Moscow's allegations about the supposed terrorist attack with two drones and suggested that the alleged attack could be used by Russia as a pretext for a new attack inside Ukraine.
The Kremlin did not provide any evidence to support its claims that Ukraine tried to assassinate Putin in a drone attack but said that it "reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it sees fit."
"Russian military and special services had disabled two attacking drones, sending debris crashing onto the grounds of the seat of government. We view these actions as a planned terrorist attack and an assassination attempt targeting the President, carried out ahead of Victory Day. Russia reserves the right to take countermeasures wherever and whenever it deems appropriate," said a statement on the Kremlin's website.
