Abu Dhabi: An Indian national was killed, and another was injured after debris from an intercepted ballistic missile fell over a populated area in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, highlighting the risks posed by ongoing regional hostilities.

The incident occurred on Sweihan Street after air defence systems were activated to neutralise an incoming missile. While the primary threat was successfully intercepted, fragments from the destroyed projectile rained down on the ground, resulting in casualties and damage. Authorities confirmed that, in addition to the Indian victims, an individual of Pakistani origin was also killed, while others injured included nationals from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

The Abu Dhabi media office wrote in a post on X, "In the context of the ongoing follow-up to the previously announced incident resulting from the fall of debris following the successful interception of a ballistic missile by air defenses, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals of Pakistani and Indian nationality."

Emergency services were swiftly deployed to the site to assist the injured and clear debris, which also damaged several vehicles. Officials said the situation was brought under control, and an investigation is underway.

The latest fatality takes the number of Indian nationals killed in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to at least seven. According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, the country’s air defence systems have intercepted hundreds of aerial threats since the escalation began, including 372 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,826 unmanned aerial vehicles.

The ministry also reported that 169 people have been injured since the start of attacks attributed to Iran, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. It reaffirmed its preparedness to counter any threats and protect national security.

Officials emphasised that despite successful interceptions, falling debris remains a significant hazard. Authorities have urged the public to rely on verified information as further updates are awaited.
