Majority of Americans oppose US strikes on Iran, poll finds
text_fieldsNew Delhi: President Donald Trump’s approval ratings have dropped to their lowest point since he returned to the White House in January 2025, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The survey highlights widespread disapproval of the war he launched on Iran as a key factor in the decline.
The poll found that 61% of Americans disapprove of the US strikes on Iran, up from 59% last week. Only 35% approve, down from 37% in the previous Reuters/Ipsos survey. This shift is particularly striking for a country currently engaged in war and raises concerns for Trump and his administration ahead of the November mid-term elections.
A February 28–March 1 Reuters/Ipsos poll had reported that 27% of respondents approved of the strikes, 43% disapproved, and 29% were unsure.
The survey also found that 46% of Americans believe the war in Iran will make the US less safe in the long run, while only 26% said it would increase national security. The remainder felt it would have little effect either way.
Economic concerns may also be driving disapproval. Since the war began, the average price of gas in the US has risen by about a dollar per gallon. Additionally, only 29% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy. Reuters notes that this is the lowest economic approval rating in either of Trump’s presidential terms and falls below the lowest economic ratings of his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden—a particular challenge given that Trump campaigned on maintaining a strong economy.
The poll was conducted online nationwide, recording responses from 1,272 US adults over four days, with a reported margin of error of three percentage points.
