Tehran: At least 57 children have been killed in a missile strike on a girls’ primary school in the southern Iranian town of Minab, Iranian state media reported. Another 60 students were injured in the attack, according to the report.
The school is located in Hormozgan Province, an area where the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintains a base. Authorities have not yet released details on the circumstances surrounding the strike or identified those responsible.
The reported attack comes amid escalating tensions following coordinated airstrikes launched on February 28 by the United States and Israel across multiple locations in Iran. Explosions were reported in Tehran, Qom, Isfahan and several other cities.
In the capital, Tehran, residents gathered outside the gates of the University of Tehran to hold a collective prayer as attacks continued in different parts of the country.
Condemning the attack on the school, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the crime will not go unanswered, Iranian state media IRNA reported. He posted a photo of the destroyed school building on social media and said that the educational institution was targeted in broad daylight.
“Tens of innocent children were killed in this place alone,” he wrote. “This crime against the Iranian people will not go unanswered.”
Iran launched waves of missiles toward Israel in response to pre-emptive Israeli and US strikes on Iranian targets, triggering sirens and intercepts across Israeli territory. In its initial wave of attacks, Iran launched 125 missiles toward Israel. Of these, 35 crossed into Israeli airspace, while the remaining projectiles were intercepted before reaching the country. The assault triggered warning sirens across central and northern parts of Israel, according to reports.
