Greta Thunberg warns of terrible consequences of using fossil fuels, calls it a "death sentence"
text_fieldsBonn: Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg once again warned against the use of fossil fuels and said it will be a "death sentence" to millions of people across the world. She urged politicians to take action to lower the use of fossil fuels and phase them out.
Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of UN-led climate talks in Bonn, she said: "It will be impossible for us to stick to the 1.5-degree limit without a rapid, equitable, fossil fuel phase-out. If we don't, it will be a death sentence for countless people. It is already a death sentence to countless people living on the frontlines of the climate crisis."
At the same press conference, Kenyan climate campaigner Eric Njuguna said the appointment of Sultan al-Jaber, head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, to lead the Dubai climate negotiations was akin to allowing "a mosquito (to) lead the fight against malaria," reported Reuters.
Last week, Sultan Al-Jaber recognized the inevitability of reducing the use of fossil fuels. He has also supported a COP28 roadmap that aims to triple renewable energy, double energy efficiency, and double clean hydrogen by 2030. Despite this, the roadmap does not explicitly commit to phasing out the use of fossil fuels.
