Former FBI director James Comey indicted as Trump targets political enemies

New York: The former FBI director, James Comey who is frequently targeted by Trump, is charged with making a false statement to Congress and ‘obstruction of a congressional proceeding,’ The Guardian reported.
Related to testimony he gave to Congress, James Comey faces charges for allegedly lying to a Senate committee in 2020 regarding if he authorized leaking a classified information to the media.
After he was indicted, Comey called himself innocent alongside stating that he had ‘great confidence in the federal judicial system’.
Only days ago President Trump urged the top US law enforcement official to probe his political adversaries including Comey.
The two-page indictment said that the charges were brought on Comey with one count of making false statement while the other being about obstruction of justice.
Both of them are related to Comey’s appearance at a Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2020 to face questions about the FBI's handling of two investigations.
While one was about Russia’s pro-Trump election interference, the other was about ‘Clinton's use of a private email server’.
Recently, the case was handed over to a new prosecutor after Trump administration fired Erik Seibert, the original US attorney overseeing the case, replacing him with Ms Halligan.
The development comes after Trump expressed dissatisfaction recently over what he said delay in prosecuting his critics including Comey, Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Leticia James, according to BBC.
