Paris: The Paris city mayor informed that it would switch off the Eiffel Tower'sTower's lights an hour earlier than usual to save energy in the upcoming winter. Also, the administration has decided to lower the temperature of municipal pools and delay the heating of public buildings for the same cause, Reuters reported.

The new measures are introduced to align with President Emmanuel Macron'sMacron's target of industry, households, and municipal authorities to reduce their respective energy consumption by 10%. France resorted to such strict measures after Russia cut gas supplies after Europe imposed sanctions on it due Moscow'sMoscow's offensive into Ukraine.

Reuters reports that nations across Europe are making their best to slash energy consumption to fill up their gas reservoirs, expecting a possible total energy cutoff.

Though France is not as dependent on Russia as its other neighbours for gas, several nuclear reactor outages in there had forced it to import power when it used to be an exporter of the same. This has put further pressure on power markets, Reuters reports.

The majestic Eiffel Tower stays lit up till 1 am. Its lighting system lends it a golden glow, and switching off the same at 11:45 pm means a 4 per cent reduction in its power consumption.

The Mayor informed that from September 23, lighting in public buildings in the city would also be switched off by 10 pm. The water temperature of pools would be reduced to 25 Celcius from 26, and the heating of public buildings will be brought down to 18.

Reuters reports that Paris'sParis's energy expense will hit 90 million euros this year. It is 35 million more than usual even after long-term electricity and gas contracts, which supports the administration, reigning the cost increases.

In the meantime, the Mayor of Paris said France would always be the City of Light.
