According to the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, Egypt has taken charge as Chair of the 15th session of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (UN PBC), succeeding Canada to the role. The decision was made through elections at UN headquarters in New York after the UN African group elected Egypt to represent Africa in December 2020.

"Egypt assumes the chairmanship in the wake of the successful conclusion of the third five-year comprehensive review process of the United Nations peacebuilding architecture," said Mohamed Fathi Ahmed Edrees, Egypt's permanent representative to the United Nations and the current Chair of the Commission's 15th session.

He added that Egypt would continue to promote and expand the Commission's partnerships with regional and sub-regional organizations and international financial institutions as an African country.

In a virtual, high-level UN conference last week, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry vowed to support efforts meant to provide adequate and sustainable financing for the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund under its presidency of the Peacebuilding Commission this year.
