China resorts to draconian detention measures to battle Covid: Report
text_fieldsDespite warnings that the infectious Omicron variant makes a Zero Covid strategy impossible, videos have emerged on social media showing that quarantine camps with rows of cramped metal boxes to house those suspected of having Covid-19 are erupting in China.
The country is attempting to eradicate the virus using draconian measures. A total of 20 million people are presently confined to their homes in China after the cities of Anyang, Yuzhou, and Xi'an were placed under lockdown. The people are banned from leaving their homes even for essentials like food. Anyang was locked down late Monday after two cases of Omicron was reported. As per a report by BBC, thousands, including pregnant women, children and the elderly, were moved to camps.
Online footages show people in tiny boxes furnished with a wooden bed and a toilet. They are forced to remain in this detention for as long as two weeks.
