China pledges to strengthen strategic partnership with Maldives
text_fieldsBeijing: China has expressed its commitment to strengthening a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with the Maldives, emphasizing that their normal cooperation does not target any third party and will not be disrupted by external influences.
The statement came after the signing of a defense cooperation agreement between China and the Maldives, wherein China pledged to provide free military assistance.
The details of the agreement were not disclosed, but it followed the Maldives' decision to allow a Chinese "research ship" to dock near Male, raising concerns about Chinese influence in the region. China and the Maldives recently elevated their bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
In response to questions about the military agreement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning directed the media to "competent Chinese authorities" for details. She reiterated China's commitment to working with the Maldives, stating, "Normal cooperation between China and the Maldives does not target any third party and will not be disrupted by any third party."
The military agreement with China comes amid geopolitical tensions in the region, particularly with India, and follows the Maldives President's push for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the country.
China also commented on the political developments in Nepal, welcoming the formation of a new government coalition and cabinet reshuffle.
Mao expressed hope that relevant parties in Nepal would work together to achieve political stability, economic growth, and improved livelihoods. China aims to deepen its traditional friendship with Nepal, uphold the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, and strengthen practical cooperation.
