Cairo: At least 64 people, including 13 children, were killed in a strike in Sudan’s western Darfur region last week, according to the World Health Organization, which reported the toll on Saturday.

The attack targeted Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on Friday, leaving at least 89 others injured and putting the facility out of service. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X that the strike had rendered the hospital non-operational.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, when tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces escalated into a nationwide war, AP reported.

The RSF accused the military of carrying out the hospital strike. However, the army denied responsibility, while two unnamed military officials reportedly said the intended target had been a nearby police station, adding that they could not speak publicly on the matter.

According to United Nations estimates, the war has claimed more than 40,000 lives, although humanitarian organisations believe the real figure could be significantly higher. The WHO has also indicated that attacks on healthcare facilities since the conflict began have killed over 2,000 people.

Ghebreyesus stressed that the level of violence and suffering had gone too far and called for urgent efforts to de-escalate thudan.
