A video that emerged from Mexico's Zacatecas neighbourhood showed a dog running down a street with a human head in its mouth.

Holding the decapitated head by its neck, the dog sprinted through one of the nation's violence-plagued streets last Wednesday, reports Fox News.

The dog was believed to have picked up the head from a crime scene in the north of Mexico and was taking somewhere to eat it.

A law enforcement official had to pry the bloodied head from the stray dog's mouth.

Authorities reportedly said that the head was left in an automatic tell booth in the town of Monte Escobedo.

There was a warning next to the decapitated head that read "the next head is yours", which was to intimidate other drug cartels or authorities, according to the report.

The Mexican drug cartels often leave notes beside dismembered human remains as a form of threat.

Reports say that dreaded drug dealers the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG) was behind this latest murder and the deceased's identity has not yet been traced.

Zacatecas reportedly has long been a scene of wars between local gangs backed by drug cartels.

The incident of dog stealing a head comes days after the gang fight that left 18 dead in the southwestern state of Guerrero.
