Kyiv: When Russia sent 71 cruise missiles at Ukraine on Friday, the latter's defence shot down 61 of them, Reuters reported citing the latter's air force information.

Ukraine air force said through Telegram, the messaging app, that the enemy launched 71 X-101, X-555 and Kalibr missiles as of Friday 11:30 am.

"The air defence forces, Air Force and other components of the Ukrainian Defence Forces destroyed 61 enemy cruise missiles," Reuters quoted the air force.

Earlier on Friday, Ukrainian Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Russia fired more than 50 missiles at Ukraine, and the majority were shot down.

Shmyhal said on Telegram that Russia cannot accept failures and is continuing to terrorize the Ukrainian people. He said that the fresh attacks were another attempt to destroy their country's energy system, intending to deprive the people of light, heat, and water.

Meanwhile, Kyiv's air force said that Russia employed eight Tu-95MS strategic bombers and that they had fired X-101 and X-555 missiles from the Caspian Sea as well as from the city of Volgodonsk in Russia.

The air force added that Russian forces launched Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles too from ships in the Black Sea.
