British Columbia: At least 10 people, including the gunman, are dead and several others injured after a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, a small mining town in British Columbia, Canada, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), seven people were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, two others at a nearby residence, and the suspect was found dead from what police described as a “self-inflicted injury.”

Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd, who commands the RCMP’s northern district, said that about 100 staff and students at the school were evacuated safely. Two people with serious injuries were airlifted to hospital, while 25 others were treated at a local medical centre. Floyd added that the house near the school was connected to the shootings.

“There are 10 confirmed fatalities. We have not yet determined the motives for this attack,” Floyd said, adding that indications suggest the suspect may have been a woman or someone in female attire.

Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as “horrific acts of violence” on X, while British Columbia Premier David Eby called it an “unimaginable tragedy” and assured that the government will provide all possible support to the community.

MLA Larry Neufeld also offered condolences, thanking first responders, school staff, and local officials for their swift action. “This is a small, close-knit town, and the impact of an event like this is felt by everyone,” he said.

Tumbler Ridge, a town of about 2,400 people, is known for its coal mining and dinosaur fossils. Mass shootings are rare in Canada, with the last major school incident occurring in Montreal in 1989, when 14 people were killed.

Police have urged residents to allow time for the investigation and have not disclosed further details about the suspect.
