San Francisco: Elon Musk has fired janitors at the headquarters of Twitter and employees are now carrying their own toilet paper to deal with a "smelly office."

A report in the New York Times said janitors were on a strike for higher pay which led to layoffs. The lack of janitorial services has "left the office in disarray". Bathrooms in the building have "grown dirty" and bad odours of leftover food are persisting.

The employees are also struggling with body odour because they are crammed onto two floors and the management has closed four other floors. Musk has been taking drastic measures to reduce expenditure. Twitter's New York office also laid off cleaners and security guards.

The new owner of Twitter has shut down data centres in Sacramento, California. It was one of three critical server facilities. Employees have expressed concern that this will affect the platform's performance. They were told saving money is the priority. The Seattle building of Twitter has stopped paying rent and its employees are asked to work from home. Some reports say the company will limit itself to offices in New York City and San Francisco only.

According to the NYT report, Musk's "erratic and hands-on leadership style" has alienated some employees. The billionaire is allegedly trying to cut $500 million from Twitter's budget.
