Shared Claude chats briefly appeared in Google search results, says report

Some conversations shared through Anthropic's Claude AI chatbot briefly appeared in Google search results over the weekend, exposing sensitive information in some cases, including cryptocurrency wallet keys, according to a Fortune report.
The issue came to light after users raised concerns on Reddit, prompting scrutiny of how Claude's shared chat links were being indexed.
Responding to the report, an Anthropic spokesperson said the company does not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines.
"In keeping with our privacy principles, we do not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines like Google," the spokesperson told Fortune.
The spokesperson added that shared links are "not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves."
According to Anthropic, users who create a shareable link are making that conversation publicly accessible, and it may be archived by third-party services like other public web content.
Fortune reported that Anthropic has fixed the issue and Claude conversation links are no longer appearing in Google search results. However, links that had already been exposed before the fix remain accessible to anyone who already has them.
The report said only conversations that users had deliberately shared were affected. Claude chats remain private by default. When a user shares a conversation, the platform creates a separate web page containing a snapshot of that chat, without exposing the user's account or other conversations.
The report noted that similar incidents have occurred with other AI chatbots. Forbes previously reported that nearly 100,000 shared ChatGPT conversations appeared in Google search results, while Elon Musk's Grok chatbot has also reportedly experienced a similar issue.
