New Delhi : Research shows that seven out of ten smartphones in the top ten list of the world's best-selling smartphones in 2021 were iPhones.

Global smartphone unit sales in 2021 were 19 per cent driven by the ten best-selling models, according to market research firm Counterpoint. In 2020, this figure was 16 per cent.

"The share of the top 10 models is increasing year-over-year, suggesting that brands are consolidating their portfolios and focusing on their top models in some cases," the research firm said.

"With entry-level models facing component shortages in 2021, we also saw faster diffusion of key features in the mid-tier segment," it mentioned.

In 2021, more than 4,200 different smartphone models were on the global market. Apple ranked seventh on the list, its highest-ever ranking, while Xiaomi ranked second and Samsung ranked third.

Apple had five models in the top five positions in 2021: the iPhone 12 was the most popular model, followed by the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 Pro. The top three models accounted for almost half of Apple's sales.

In 2021, Samsung's Galaxy A12 took the sixth spot. The smartphone was popular in almost all regions and countries.
