Sudan: Thousands take streets demanding civilian rule

Khartoum: Demanding civilian rule in Sudan and urging authorities to penalize killers of protesters in demonstrations in the past weeks, thousands of protesters took the streets of the capital, Khartoum, on Sunday, IANS reported.
At the Sharwani bus station in the capital, protesters gathered and marched to the Republican Palace. However, security troops issued tear gas to expel protesters.
In the central area of the capital, security troops had closed roads and stationed military reinforcements around army headquarters. All roads leading to the presidential palace are also being heavily manned.
On Saturday, the security committee of the state had banned all gatherings in central Khartoum for the weekend, but protesters gathered nevertheless.
Meanwhile, the UN Integrated Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan on Sunday asked the Sudanese administration not to control peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
In the last two months, Khartoum, along with other cities, witnessed frequent mass protests demanding civilian rule in the country. Dozens have killed during the demonstrations amid clashes with security forces. The situation in Sudan moved into a political crisis after the Sudanese Armed Forces general commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan declared an emergency in the nation on October 25, 2021. He dissolved Sovereign Council and the government.
