India is set to send its largest-ever contingent to the Paris 2024 Paralympics, with a record 84 athletes slated to compete in the games scheduled from August 28 to September 8.

This marks a significant increase from the 54 athletes, including 14 women, who represented the country at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

The Indian team for Paris 2024 includes 32 women athletes and will participate in 12 sports, including three new ones for India: para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo.

Among the newcomers to the Indian Paralympic team are Arshad Shaik, who will compete in the men’s C2 para-cycling events, and Jyoti Gaderiya, who will participate in the women’s C2 category. Kapil Parmar will represent India in the men’s 60kg J1 event in blind judo, while Kokila will compete in the women’s 48kg J2 category. In para-rowing, Anita and K. Narayana will take part in the PR3 mixed doubles sculls.

India's performance at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics was its best to date, with the country securing 19 medals, including five golds. Among the standout athletes returning for Paris 2024 is Avani Lekhara, who won gold in the women’s R2 10m air rifle standing SH1 event in Tokyo, becoming the first Indian woman to claim a Paralympic gold medal. Lekhara is set to compete again in Paris.

Another notable returnee is Sumit Antil, the men’s F64 javelin thrower who won gold at Tokyo 2020 and is a two-time world champion. Antil holds the world record in his event, with a throw of 73.29m, achieved at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou last year.

In para table tennis, Bhavina Patel, who made history by winning India’s first Paralympic medal in the sport at Tokyo 2020, will compete in both the women’s singles and doubles events, partnering with Sonalben Patel.

Harvinder Singh, who became the first Indian to win a Paralympic medal in archery, will also return, competing in the men’s individual recurve open and mixed team recurve open categories.
