World Cup final chaos: FIFA opens disciplinary probe on Argentina

New York: FIFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into Argentina following violent scenes after the team's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The probe primarily focuses on Argentina players Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, along with assistant coach Roberto Fabián Ayala, over their alleged involvement in post-match altercations.
Spain secured the World Cup title at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey after Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in extra time. However, celebrations turned chaotic after the final whistle when Molina allegedly struck Spain captain Rodri, triggering a confrontation between players and staff.
Paredes was later involved in clashes with Eric García and Gavi, while Ayala was seen confronting Dani Olmo. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni intervened in an attempt to calm the situation.
Paredes was shown a red card after the final whistle for his role in the melee. Enzo Fernández had already been sent off late in normal time after receiving a second yellow card, while Scaloni and three other Argentina players were booked during the match.
After reviewing the referee's report and other match documents, FIFA invoked Article 36 of its Disciplinary Code and appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate possible violations. Players and officials found guilty could face suspensions and other disciplinary sanctions.
FIFA is also examining Argentina's celebrations after their semi-final victory over England, during which players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Malvinas are Argentine"). Since FIFA regulations prohibit political messages on the field of play, the incident could also lead to disciplinary action.
The investigation could result in suspensions or other penalties for players and officials found responsible for misconduct.
