Birmingham: Jasprit Bumrah marked his return to One-Day International cricket in style by becoming India's highest wicket-taker in ODIs on English soil during the opening match against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

Playing his first ODI after a gap of 968 days, Bumrah reached the milestone by dismissing England captain Harry Brook. The wicket was his 150th in ODI cricket and his 31st in England, taking him past Ravindra Jadeja's tally of 30 wickets to become India's most successful ODI bowler in the country.

Bumrah now leads the list of Indian ODI wicket-takers in England, followed by Jadeja (30), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (28), Madan Lal (27) and Mohammed Shami (26).

The dismissal of Brook also saw Bumrah become the third-fastest Indian bowler to reach 150 ODI wickets in terms of balls bowled. He achieved the landmark in 4,605 deliveries, behind only Mohammed Shami (4,070) and Kuldeep Yadav (4,513), while moving ahead of Ajit Agarkar (5,027) and Irfan Pathan (5,131).

With the milestone, Bumrah also entered an exclusive global club alongside Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan and New Zealand's Tim Southee as the only cricketers to register 200 Test wickets, 150 ODI wickets and 100 T20I wickets. Bumrah currently has 234 Test wickets, 150 ODI wickets and 121 T20I wickets.

His record in England underlines his success in overseas conditions. In 17 ODIs in the country, Bumrah has claimed 31 wickets at an average of 21.41 and an economy rate of 4.44. His best ODI figures of 6/19 also came against England during the 2022 series. Earlier, he picked up 18 wickets during the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in England, helping India reach the semi-finals.

Earlier in the match, all-rounder Axar Patel registered career-best ODI figures of 4/62 as England were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs despite Joe Root's resilient 76. England recovered from a middle-order collapse through a 121-run seventh-wicket partnership between Root and Liam Dawson to post a competitive total in the series opener.
