Asian Games: India opens medal account with silver in women’s air rifle team event

India won its first medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, securing silver in the women’s 10m air rifle team event through the combined efforts of Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod.
The Indian trio registered a total of 1,898 points to finish behind China in the team standings. Japan occupied fourth place, while Korea remained in contention with one shooter yet to complete her series.
Elavenil delivered an impressive performance, scoring 633.5 points and qualifying for the individual final. Sonam Maskar also advanced to the individual final, giving India two contenders in the event, ANI reported.
The shooting team’s silver marked India’s opening medal at the Games.
Meanwhile, Suchika Tariyal secured a medal in the women’s traditional 60kg MMA competition after defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa in Nagoya on Friday to reach the semifinals.
Baigalmaa intensified her attack during the second and final round in an effort to change the outcome, but Suchika successfully resisted the pressure. As her opponent continued to push forward, the Indian fighter executed a decisive reversal and brought Baigalmaa to the ground.
Suchika maintained control for the remainder of the round, securing the victory and advancing to the semifinals. Her win also guaranteed India a medal in the MMA event.
