How Cyclone Tauktae affected Kerala

The Cyclonic Tauktae formed over the Arabian Sea is causing heavy rains with gusty winds over Kerala and Karnataka. Authorities issued red alerts for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Kasaragod.

The intensified depression wreaks havoc along the coastal regions in Kerala.The coastal belt of Kerala seen many houses washed away, roads damaged and uprooted trees.

71 relief camps operate across Kerala to shelter people affected by sea erosion. 543 families consisting of 2,094 are now in camps.

The rising water level in the rivers Manimala and Achankovil also prompted the Central Water Commission to issue a flood alert in Kerala.

Shutters of Kallarkutty and Malankara dams in Idukki, Bhoothathankettu dam in Ernakulam, Maniyar in Pathanamthitta and Aruvikkara dams in Thiruvananthapuram were lifted due to high water inflows.
