Washington: US President Joe Biden has unequivocally reaffirmed the United States' commitment to the rights of the Palestinian people, even in the midst of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The American President emphasised that the actions of Hamas should not, and do not, undermine these fundamental rights.

While assuring Israel's inherent right to self-defence, Biden also underlined the importance of adhering to the laws of war to safeguard the lives of innocent civilians during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The American President's comments reflect his administration's determination to strike a balance by extending support to Israel's self-defence measures while demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of Palestinians.

He has also called for a two-state solution in this ongoing conflict and stressed the need to protect civilians during the military confrontation.

He emphasised that Israel, in its pursuit of self-defence, should make every effort to protect non-combatants in accordance with international humanitarian law. Furthermore, Biden expressed deep concern for the humanity and well-being of innocent Palestinians, who yearn for nothing more than the opportunity to lead peaceful lives in the region.

He wrote on X, "The United States remains committed to the Palestinian people's right to dignity and to self-determination. The actions of Hamas don't take that right away."

He added, "Israel has the right to defend itself. We must make sure they have what they need to protect their people today and always. At the same time, Prime Minister Netanyahu and I have discussed how Israel must operate by the laws of war. That means protecting civilians in combat as best as they can."

The President went on to highlight his successful efforts in securing the first shipment of humanitarian assistance for Palestinian civilians residing in Gaza.

The gesture echoes the global concern for the humanitarian crisis faced by the Palestinian population.
