UAE, Saudi Arabia welcome UN resolution condemning Iran attacks

The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which condemns Iranian missile and drone attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council states and Jordan.

The resolution, led by Bahrain on behalf of GCC countries and Jordan, condemns the attacks in the strongest terms and calls on Iran to cease them immediately. It states that the assaults constitute a breach of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security.

Resolution 2817 demands that Iran halt any provocations or threats against neighbouring states, including through the use of proxies. It also affirms the right of self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter and calls on Iran to meet its obligations under international law, particularly in protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure. The resolution addresses concerns over regional stability, freedom of navigation and global economic security.

Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said, “The adoption of this resolution, co-sponsored by 135 countries, sends a clear and unified message that the international community will not tolerate attacks on our sovereignty or the deliberate targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure”.

In Riyadh, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the Kingdom supports the resolution’s condemnation of attacks on residential areas and civilian sites and the resulting casualties and damage. The ministry noted broad international backing for the measure and called for the attacks to stop immediately and without conditions.
