UAE launches specialized nursing residency programmes
text_fieldsUAE introduces specialised nursing residency programmes to help nurses achieve clinical specialisation. The National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS) has approved three programmes: a residency for fresh graduates, a critical care programme for adults and one focused on mental health nursing.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (Mohap), along with various health and academic authorities, endorsed these programmes. Hospitals can apply for them this year. The initiative aims to empower nursing staff, particularly Emiratis, to advance their careers and specialise, aligning with the UAE's leadership directives for a healthier society and contributing to national healthcare goals.
The residency programmes align with the National Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery (Roadmap 2022–2026), which seeks to enhance the governance of nursing professions, improve regulatory policies, ensure patient safety, manage the workforce and support evidence-based research tailored to the country's health needs.
Dr. Mohammed Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of Mohap, highlighted the importance of the nursing profession and the need for competent Emirati nurses to provide high-quality care. He stressed the importance of investing in the nursing specialisation system and educational structure to enable UAE nationals to deliver excellent healthcare services.
Nursing experts, including Dr. Sumaya Mohamed Al Balushi, Head of the National Committee for Nursing and Midwifery at Mohap, encouraged Emirati nurses to take advantage of the new residencies to advance their careers and support this strategic initiative.
