Motorists in the UAE have a unique opportunity to reduce four black points from their driving records by adhering to traffic rules on August 26, the first day of the new academic year.

This initiative promotes road safety as thousands of students return to school after the summer break.

To participate, drivers must sign an online pledge through the Ministry of Interior's website, which requires logging in with their UAE Pass. Once the pledge is signed, motorists must avoid traffic violations or accidents on August 26 to qualify for the reduction in black points.

The pledge itself outlines six essential traffic rules that participants must follow: maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, giving priority to pedestrians at crossings, always wearing a seatbelt, adhering to speed limits, avoiding the use of handheld mobile phones while driving and giving way to emergency vehicles, police, public service vehicles, and official convoys.

If motorists meet all the conditions of the initiative, four black points will be automatically removed from their driving license on September 14.

Additionally, after signing the pledge, participants will receive a certificate of participation via email.

This initiative also allows drivers to understand the impact of black points, which are penalties for serious traffic violations. For example, reckless driving can result in a Dh2,000 fine and 23 black points, while failing to wear a seatbelt incurs a Dh400 fine and four black points. Accumulating 24 black points within a year leads to the suspension of the driving license.
