Gold worth Rs 14 Cr seized in poll-bound Maharashtra
text_fieldsNagpur/Lucknow: Poll officials seized gold worth Rs 14.5 crore here in poll-bound Maharashtra on Saturday. This is during the model code of conduct for the elections scheduled for November 20, PTI reported.
The gold, in the form of ornaments and biscuits, was being transported by Gujarat-based firm Sequel Logistics when the Flying Surveillance Team (FST) apprehended it, he said.
"The shipment arrived in Nagpur by flight on Thursday and was being sent to Amravati. The vehicle was stopped while it was moving from Ambazari Lake to Wadi. The gold was taken to the Ambazari police station. A probe revealed Sequel Logistics did not have the necessary permission from the Election Commission to transport such a large amount of gold during the poll period," the official said.
Further probe into the case is underway, he added.
The model code of conduct has been in force in Maharashtra since October 15. Results of the assembly polls will be declared on November 23.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) at the Charbagh railway station in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow seized drugs worth Rs 2 crore, PTI reported.
According to the GRP, a case has been registered against two men -- Santosh Singh, a resident of Telpa in Bihar's Chhapra district, and Ram Lotan, a resident of Chandi in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh.
A campaign against suspected smugglers is underway based on the instructions of Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Prakash D of the GRP.
According to the statement issued here, in a joint operation by the RPF post and the GRP station at Charbagh, the banned drug oxytocin worth Rs 1,93,73,904, which was being smuggled from Bihar through the railway parcel, was seized.
Information was received that a large consignment of oxytocin in packets had come from Chhapra to Lucknow on train number 15053, the statement said.
A search was conducted, and 38 packets containing the banned drug were found in the parcel house. A probe revealed the names of the two accused, against whom an FIR was registered at the Charbagh GRP station.
According to police, there is a possibility that others were also involved in the smuggling of the consignment.
