The UAE has strongly condemned Iranian attacks on the national oil tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, saying both vessels were targeted by two Iranian cruise missiles while passing through the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the tankers were transiting within Omani territorial waters when the attack took place.

According to the ministry, one Indian national was killed and eight others were injured. Four of the injured sustained serious wounds. The injured include six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian nationals.

The ministry extended condolences to the family of the deceased and to the government and people of India, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The UAE said the attack was a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which stresses freedom of navigation and rejects attacks on commercial vessels or obstruction of international maritime routes.

The ministry said targeting commercial shipping and using the Strait of Hormuz for economic pressure or blackmail amounted to piracy and posed a direct threat to regional stability, the people of the region and global energy security.

The UAE called on Iran to stop the attacks, commit fully to an immediate halt to hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz completely and without conditions.

It said such steps were necessary to protect regional security and maintain the stability of global trade and the world economy.
