Abu Dhabi: An urgent health alert has been issued to passengers on a flight from Abu Dhabi to Dublin after a fellow traveler was found to have measles. Ireland's Health Service Executive (HSE) asked passengers on board the Etihad Airways flight, which landed in the Irish capital at 6.30 am on Saturday, to contact them.

Etihad Airways flight EY045 departed from Abu Dhabi and landed in Dublin on March 9, 2024. The incident has prompted health authorities to take immediate action to prevent the spread of the highly contagious measles virus.

Passengers who are pregnant, immunocompromised or have children under the age of 12 months have been urged to contact their local HSE Department of Public Health or call the HSE helpline on 1800 700 700, or 00 353 1 240 8787 if calling from outside of Ireland.

Additionally, other passengers on the flight have been advised to be vigilant for symptoms of measles and monitor their health until March 30, which marks 21 days from the potential date of exposure.

Symptoms of measles include a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, sore or red eyes, fever above 38°C, and a rash that typically starts on the head and neck before spreading to the rest of the body. Passengers who experience any of these symptoms are advised to isolate at home and seek medical advice over the phone.

Etihad Airways has stated that it is following safety procedures in response to the measles case. The airline was informed by health authorities in Ireland and is cooperating fully with their instructions. Close contact tracing will be conducted as per government guidelines to prevent further transmission of the virus.

Public health authorities emphasize the importance of early treatment for measles and encourage affected individuals to seek medical attention promptly. Timely intervention can prevent complications and reduce the risk of further transmission within the community. Vaccination and supportive care can help alleviate symptoms and prevent serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis. Health authorities stress the need for swift action to protect public health.

Etihad Airways reassures passengers that safety and well-being are its top priorities. The airline is fully committed to cooperating with health authorities and implementing necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of passengers and crew members.
