Abu Dhabi enacts new rules for environmental emergency response

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has introduced a new regulation aimed at enhancing preparedness and response to environmental emergencies across the emirate.

The regulation, issued under Law No. 16 of 2005 and its amendments, authorises the agency to take immediate action in the event of environmental threats, ensuring timely intervention to mitigate damage and protect ecosystems. It applies to all facilities and projects requiring EAD licensing, particularly those with the potential to cause pollution in marine, terrestrial or air environments.

EAD is now empowered to classify facilities based on environmental risk, review and approve their emergency response plans, and define preparedness standards. The regulation also mandates licensed entities to adopt preventive measures, develop robust emergency response plans and ensure trained personnel are on hand to manage potential crises.

As part of its enforcement strategy, the agency will conduct awareness workshops and emergency simulation drills to strengthen readiness among stakeholders. The initiative forms a key component of EAD’s wider framework for environmental licensing, inspection, and enforcement, aligning with its mission to promote sustainability and reduce environmental hazards linked to industrial and developmental activities.

Implementation of the regulation will be carried out in coordination with strategic partners, following a structured approach to ensure compliance across the emirate.
