Americans detained in Saudi Arabia for photographing recent attacks, US embassy says
text_fieldsAmerican citizens have been detained in Saudi Arabia for taking photographs of recent events, the US embassy said on Monday, following a series of deadly Houthi attacks on the Kingdom’s airports.
The mission said, “American citizens have been detained for taking photos of recent events”, but did not specify how many people had been detained.
It cited a Saudi warning that “filming, publishing, or sharing information related to counter missiles and drones and their impact sites exposes you to legal liability.”
The embassy reminded visitors and residents that they are subject to Saudi laws.
The mission also announced restrictions on airport use by US government personnel.
“US government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorization to use any airport in Saudi Arabia”, it said.
American citizens were urged to “take extreme caution” if they chose to use airports in the Kingdom.
The warning follows repeated Houthi strikes on Saudi aviation facilities. Attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh have killed at least 18 people, including 13 in Saturday’s strike, and injured hundreds.
Two people were also killed in an attack on Abha International Airport on Tuesday, October 6.
