Amid growing frustration over the ongoing war, hundreds of Palestinians took to the streets of northern Gaza in what has been described as the largest anti-Hamas protest since the conflict with Israel began.

The demonstrations, which erupted in Beit Lahia, saw protesters calling for an end to the war and demanding Hamas relinquish power.

Videos circulating on social media late Tuesday showed protesters chanting "Out, out, out, Hamas out" and "Hamas terrorists", while holding signs with messages such as "Stop the war" and "We want to live in peace". Similar protests were also reported in the Jabalia refugee camp, where demonstrators burned tires and chanted, "We want to eat", reflecting growing hardship in the region.

According to reports, Hamas militants, some armed and others wielding batons, forcibly dispersed the crowds, with several protesters being assaulted. Witnesses claim that Hamas security forces in civilian clothing infiltrated the gatherings and broke them up.

The protests were largely mobilised through appeals circulated on Telegram, although no specific group or leader has claimed responsibility for organising them.

One protester, identified only as Mohammed, told AFP that he joined the demonstration to "send a message on behalf of the people: Enough with the war." Another demonstrator, Majdi, said "people are tired" and questioned why Hamas does not step down if it would help protect civilians.

Hamas’ political rival, Fatah, has also joined calls for Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza. Monther al-Hayek, a Fatah spokesperson in Gaza, urged Hamas to "step aside from governing" to ensure the survival of the Palestinian people.
