Kuwait condemns Iranian attacks on power plant

Kuwait has strongly condemned renewed Iranian attacks after a second strike in two days hit a power generation and water desalination plant on Sunday.

The attack came as Kuwaiti air defences intercepted hostile ballistic missiles and drones that entered the country’s airspace from dawn, authorities said.

Colonel Staff Saud Al-Atwan, spokesman for the Kuwait Armed Forces, said Iranian attacks continued to target civilian and vital facilities, including Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy installations.

He said the attacks caused fires and extensive damage to several key facilities, while stressing that the armed forces remain ready to protect Kuwait’s sovereignty, security and stability in coordination with relevant authorities.

The Foreign Ministry described the strike on the power and desalination facility as a direct attack on a vital civilian installation.

It said the repeated targeting of civilian infrastructure reflected a systematic pattern of aggression, marked a dangerous escalation and posed a serious threat to civilian safety.

The ministry said the attacks violate international law, international humanitarian law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817, holding Iran fully responsible for the legal and moral consequences.

Kuwait said it reserves its right to take all necessary measures to protect its security, defend its territory and safeguard vital facilities under Article 51 of the UN Charter and international law.

The General Staff of the Kuwait Army said air defence systems were actively engaging hostile missiles and drones. It said explosions heard in parts of the country were linked to interception operations and urged the public to follow official safety instructions.

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the latest strike caused a fire at the plant and damaged several electricity generation units.

Emergency plans were activated to contain the incident and maintain the stability of the national power grid.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, while technical and emergency teams, in coordination with security authorities, began securing the facility, assessing the damage and restoring affected units.

The ministry said teams were working around the clock to maintain electricity supply and urged citizens and residents to conserve power during the emergency.

Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah visited injured Kuwait Fire Force personnel receiving treatment at Adan Hospital after the attacks on civilian and vital facilities.

Accompanied by Health Minister Dr Ahmad Al-Awadhi, he reviewed the medical care being provided and said the government would ensure the injured receive full treatment and support until recovery.

First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah also visited wounded Fire Force personnel who were injured while responding to a fire at a site struck in the attacks.

He was briefed by medical staff, directed that the injured receive the best possible care and praised healthcare teams for their efforts.

Earlier, Kuwait Fire Force Chief Major General Talal Al-Roumi visited firefighters injured while battling a blaze after a targeted site came under attack on Saturday. He conveyed Sheikh Fahad’s greetings, wished them a speedy recovery and praised the work of firefighters and medical teams.

On the diplomatic front, Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah held a phone call with Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.

The two ministers condemned Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Jordan, affirmed both countries’ right to take necessary measures to protect their sovereignty and security, and discussed regional developments and diplomatic efforts to contain the escalation.

Kuwait also strongly condemned Iranian attacks on Bahrain and Jordan, calling them violations of sovereignty, territorial integrity, international law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.

The Foreign Ministry expressed full solidarity with Bahrain and Jordan and backed measures taken by both countries to protect their security, sovereignty and stability.
