Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has greenlit plans for an impending attack on Rafah, signaling Israel's strategy to move approximately 1.4 million displaced Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to designated "humanitarian islands" prior to the offensive.
Rear Adm Daniel Hagari, the chief spokesman of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), disclosed in a briefing to journalists that the evacuation of Palestinians is deemed essential in the military preparations for the anticipated ground offensive in Rafah. This initiative, in collaboration with international entities, aims to address the humanitarian needs of the displaced population.
According to Hagari, Israel has identified Rafah as a significant stronghold for militants, with four battalions targeted for elimination to achieve strategic objectives.
Highlighting the urgency of the evacuation, Hagari stressed the provision of temporary shelter, sustenance, and essential supplies on the designated islands for the relocated Palestinians. However, specifics regarding the timeline of the evacuation and the commencement of the Rafah offensive were not disclosed.
Israel's operational strategy also involves coordination with neighboring Egypt to prevent the influx of displaced Palestinians across its border.
The impending attack on Rafah has raised concerns among global leaders regarding the humanitarian impact. Germany's Foreign Affairs Minister, Annalena Baerbock, expressed condemnation, emphasizing the need for a humanitarian truce to avert further casualties and secure the release of hostages.
