Iranian official links America's debt to rising military activity
text_fieldsIranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf has warned the United States against what he described as pressure tactics and military posturing in the Strait of Hormuz, saying Tehran is prepared to respond to any aggression.
In a post on X on Thursday, Ghalibaf criticised rising US military activity and linked it to America’s growing debt and economic pressures. Referring to reports that yields on 30-year US Treasury bonds had crossed 5 percent for the first time since before the 2008 financial crisis, he mocked Washington’s spending on military operations.
“So you're funding Hegseth, the failed TV host at rates unheard of since 2007, so he can cosplay as Secretary of War in our backyard in Hormuz?” Ghalibaf wrote. He added that the US was paying a “pre-GFC premium to fund a LARP” and warned it could trigger “a brand new GFC”.
Ghalibaf accused the US of using threats to turn negotiations into “surrender” and said such actions were increasing regional instability.
The remarks come after Iran imposed stricter controls in the Strait of Hormuz following what it described as an American-Israeli assault on Iran between February 28 and April 7. Tehran has also refused to resume talks with Washington unless demands, including lifting the blockade, ending hostilities, and compensation payments, are met.
Ghalibaf said Iran’s armed forces were ready to respond “deservedly” to any hostile action. Earlier in April, he had warned that continued “dangerous games” by the United States could cause the “whole region to burn”.
