Indian pilgrims travelling for Umrah are facing prolonged uncertainty after Indian carriers extended the suspension of flights to and from Saudi Arabia, prompting the country’s diplomatic missions to advise travellers to seek alternative routes home.

The Consulate General of India in Jeddah said on Sunday, October 18, that Air India, Air India Express and IndiGo had extended the suspension of their Saudi Arabia services until October 24. Akasa Air has extended its suspension until October 27.

Despite the disruptions, the consulate said airports in Jeddah, Madinah and Dammam were functioning, though flights continued to be affected.

The consulate said pilgrims could still travel through airlines operating between the two countries. Saudia has scheduled flights from Jeddah, Madinah and Dammam to India, while Flynas operates from Dammam to Delhi, Mumbai and Lucknow. Flyadeal also has flights from Dammam to Mumbai, subject to availability and schedule changes.

Travellers may also consider routing through the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait or Qatar, provided they meet the visa and entry requirements of those countries.

The consulate asked travel agents, tour operators and Umrah service providers to make alternative arrangements for pilgrims and help them return to India at the earliest. It also urged them to stay in touch with affected travellers and contact the consulate when required.

Separately, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh said Riyadh’s international airport remained closed, while the airports in Jeddah, Madinah and Dammam were operational with some disruptions.

Indian nationals were advised to take safety precautions. If an aerial attack occurs, they should immediately move to a secure location, preferably inside a building or an interior room away from windows.

The embassy also asked Indian nationals not to film, publish or share photographs, videos or information relating to the unfolding situation. Those planning to visit Saudi Arabia for Umrah or other purposes were asked to prepare for possible delays and extended stays.

The consulate said it was working with local authorities, airlines, travel operators and community volunteers to help Indians facing difficulties, including arranging access to medicines, food and other essential support.

Officials from the Indian Embassy in Riyadh are visiting hospitals where injured Indian nationals are being treated and are staying in touch with their families.
