Bahrain suspends prayers in mosques for two weeks

The Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments of Bahrain announced on Tuesday the suspension of all prayers and religious events at mosques for two weeks from Thursday (Feb 11). The ministry stated that the decision was taken after consulting the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA) and upon the recommendations of the National Medical Taskforce assigned to combat Covid-19, state news agency BNA reported.
The move is to protect elderly people as covid infections continue to surge, according to the statement, and that the suspension will be subjected to change based on developments. The ministry also notified that the Friday prayers and sermon will be aired live from the Ahmed Al Fateh Islamic Centre with a limited number of worshippers.
Bahrain had earlier shifted all educational institutions licensed by the Education Ministry to remote learning for three weeks to curb the spread of the pandemic. The country also ordered government institutions and entities to permit 70 per cent of its employees to work from home since the start of February.
